DETOUR.04
We left for Death Valley at noon.
Rain — in the driest place in North America. The park had flooded.CLOSED.
We never got in.We got a rainbow instead. And then the best skyI've ever driven under.
A friend told me about Arches. He'd never hiked. He stayed for the sunset until his phone died. Then the trail disappeared:no light, no signal, a drop on one side.
Then I looked up.The Milky Way.
Whatever comes next
Detour
I like making plans. For all those nights, I knew exactly what I'd see. Not this one.
We left for Death Valley at noon. It started raining an hour out.
Rain — in the driest place in North America. The park had flooded. CLOSED. We talked about driving through it. We didn't.
We never got in. We got a rainbow instead. And then the best sky I've ever driven under. The way back was flooded too. So we went south instead.
A friend told me about Arches. He'd never hiked. He stayed for the sunset until his phone died. Then the trail disappeared: no light, no signal, a drop on one side. He stopped. A flashlight found him. On his way out, a moose in the road. Locals said they'd never seen one there
Then I looked up. The Milky Way. I started yelling for everyone else to look up too. I cried at something I never planned to see. Nothing that mattered that weekend was on the map.
Whatever comes next probably isn't either.
ISN'T ALWAYS WHAT I EXPECTED.

Director's note / 01On directing this portfolio
Before this portfolio had pages, it had a feeling.
I kept thinking about the artists I've always admired—the ones who don't simply make a song or shoot a scene, but build a complete world around an idea. Albums and films have always felt almost magical to me. They can turn something deeply personal into an experience that belongs to everyone who enters it.
I've wanted to be a musician or a director for years, but I often imagined those lives happening somewhere far away from me: on a stage I hadn't reached, inside a studio I hadn't entered, or in a future I wasn't ready to claim.
Then I made this portfolio. I chose the rhythm, wrote the storyline, directed the transitions, shaped the atmosphere, and decided what every detail was trying to communicate. For the first time, I wasn't only admiring someone else's world. I was building one of my own.
Somewhere in that process, the distance between me and that future began to shrink. I realized that directing doesn't have to begin on a film set. It begins with having something to say, then making hundreds of choices so someone else can see it and feel it too.
That's what I did here. This portfolio is the first world I've directed from beginning to end—and I'm proud of it.
